We’ve all assumed that claims closed through C&R results in long-term savings, but does the data support that conclusion? Mike Harrington will provide an actuarial perspective on the issue and let us know whether the expected savings is real.

12:00-1:15 p.m. Lunch and Lunchtime Presentation: Current Cyber Scams & Need for Awareness

Presenter: Don Hester, Maze & Associates.

In this session we will cover some of the most popular scams we see for local governments and businesses. We will cover the potential impact of successful scams on organizations. We will also cover how to setup a cybersecurity awareness program and some tips and tricks for maturing your awareness efforts.

1:30-2:45 p.m. We Didn’t Start the Fire: Extinguishing Public Entity Liability After Wildfires

Presenters: Kimberly Chin and Christina Forst. Allen, Glasessner, Hazelwood & Werth

In recent years, California has seen some of the largest and most destructive fires in its history. Fires like the Mendocino Complex Fire, the Carr Fire, and the Camp Fire burned thousands of acres of land and caused multiple fatalities. Besides causing widespread devastation, these wildfires may ignite lawsuits against public entities. This presentation will discuss potential claims arising out of these catastrophic wildfires, including dangerous condition of public property, nuisance, and inverse condemnation, review applicable defenses, and provide defense strategies and risk management advice so public entities don’t get burned along the way.
