Schools Insurance Authority (SIA) is a Joint Powers Authority dedicated to meeting the risk management and risk financing needs of its membership. We partner with our members to help them be successful in preventing workplace injuries and property loss and maintaining safe and strong school environments for students and employees.
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Director of Risk Management, the Risk Management Specialist supports SIA’s member districts by coordinating insurance-related documentation, responding to school risk management inquiries, and facilitating proactive risk mitigation. This position plays a critical role in processing certificates of insurance, advising on risk transfer strategies, and assisting with safety, liability, and compliance-related issues.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This position requires comprehensive knowledge of risk management principles, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to interact effectively with school district personnel, vendors, and the public. The individual will be a key liaison for insurance matters and must handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
1. Process and issue certificates of insurance upon request, ensuring accurate and timely delivery and compliance with coverage terms.
2. Coordinate with member districts and vendors to ensure proper documentation and coverage for high-risk activities and special events.
3. Maintain detailed records and documentation of insurance certificates, inquiries, and contract reviews.
4. Respond to risk management inquiries from member school districts regarding waivers/forms, school district activities/exposures, liability and safety protocols.
5. Review and advise on insurance and indemnity language in contracts and agreements to support risk transfer.
6. Support the development and dissemination of SIA’s Risk Transfer Guide and other training materials.
7. Work with internal teams on matters involving risk assessment, liability concerns, and insurance requirements.
8. Participate in ongoing training and development related to school risk management best practices.
9. Provide backup support for other risk management personnel and contribute to emergency preparedness and compliance efforts.
10. Perform related duties as assigned.
The salary range for this position is $71,315-$81,000. Approximate total compensation including benefits would be an additional 35%.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
School district operations and educational risk exposures.
Principles and practices of risk management, insurance, and loss control.
Certificate of insurance requirements and policy interpretation.
State and federal laws related to risk management (e.g., ADA, OSHA, CA Education Code).
Ability to:
Respond professionally and efficiently to inquiries and requests from school personnel.
Analyze risk scenarios and propose appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
Manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and tasks with attention to detail.
Collaborate effectively with legal, compliance, and safety personnel both externally and internally.
Maintain organized records and documentation.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Utilize Microsoft Office Suite and risk management databases.
Use effective written and verbal communication techniques.
Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
A bachelor’s degree in business, risk management, public administration, or a related field is desirable.
Experience:
Three years of experience in risk management, school district operations, or a related field.
License or Certification:
Certified School Risk Manager (CSRM) Designation is highly desirable. If the successful candidate does not possess the CSRM Designation at time of hire, the candidate will agree to obtain the CSRM Designation within the first year of employment.
Possession of a Driver’s License is required as this is an essential function to the role.
