Helix Water District is a local government water utility based in La Mesa, California with a century-long history of serving San Diego’s East County communities. Formed over 100 years ago by local residents to bring water to the region, Helix today treats and delivers high-quality drinking water to approximately 278,000 people across the cities of La Mesa, El Cajon, Lemon Grove and surrounding unincorporated areas such as Spring Valley and Lakeside.
As a special district governed by an elected Board of Directors, Helix is committed to providing reliable, efficient and environmentally responsible water services for homes, schools, businesses and emergency needs like firefighting. Our mission highlights a focus on superior service, innovative resource management, and sustainable practices to support long-term water reliability and community well-being.
Helix operates an extensive system that includes water treatment facilities, distribution infrastructure with reservoirs and pump stations, and programs that emphasize water quality, conservation and infrastructure resilience. We continuously monitor and test water quality to ensure compliance with health standards and invest in modern technologies and improvements to meet the needs of a growing, diverse service area.
Beyond core water operations, Helix champions sustainability and community engagement — pursuing energy-efficient practices, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, supporting water-wise landscaping, and participating in regional partnerships to diversify long-term water supplies.
At Helix Water District, employees contribute to a mission-driven organization with a strong legacy of public service, innovation in water resource management and a commitment to customer satisfaction and environmental stewardship.
