Job Title: RISK MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY DIRECTOR (RM/EHS)
Under the general supervision of the Director of Public Safety, the Risk Management & Environmental, Health and Safety (RM/EHS) Director provides direction, leadership, and is responsible for the following: administers a comprehensive, effective, and productive RM/EHS Program that provides written technical and operational guidance related to environmental control, occupational safety, food safety, industrial hygiene, hazardous material spill response, radiation safety, biological safety, chemical safety, construction safety management, loss control, workers' compensation, student safety, claims management, and general risk management; oversees the coordination and disposal of hazardous materials; performs RM/EHS inspections; investigate, evaluate and correct University compliance with regulatory requirements; distribute university-wide bulletins/advisories on safety and risk mitigation; review University food operations to ensure their compliance with County health requirements; review requests for and issuance of temporary food permits; develop injury and illness prevention protocols; develops compliance strategies to tackle regulatory mandates, recommend technological improvements, and forecast short and long-term operating budgets; oversees the coordination and training for Business Continuity planning; maintains comprehensive Business Continuity plans and validation methodology, to ensure the campus’ ability to recover, in the event of an unforeseen disruption to facilities, technology systems or applications; serves as the Safety Officer for the University Incident Command System (ICS) under a declared and/or mobilized University emergency/disaster scenario, reporting to the Incident Commander and/or his/her designee; serves as the Influenza Manager for the University Avian Pandemic Influenza Business Continuity Plan, and actively participates on the Influenza Pandemic BCP Committee; and ensures excellent customer service in areas of Risk Management and Environmental Health and Safety.
A bachelor’s degree in health & safety, environmental engineering, chemistry, industrial hygiene, or a related field from an accredited four year college or university and five years of progressively administrative experience in the development of environmental, health, safety, and loss control/risk management programs in a large complex organization, preferably in a large institution of higher education. A master’s degree from an accredited four year college or university may supplement up to two years of experience. Candidate shall possess substantial experience in Microsoft PC-based software utilization, specifically Word for Windows, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. Must be able to handle complex and confidential matters, and respond with tact, discretion and exercise sound independent judgement; excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal communication and management skills; ability to interpret, analyze and implement pertinent provisions of Federal, State, Local and Chancellor's Office laws, statutes, codes, rules and orders; and work closely with California State University Risk Management Authority (CSURMA). Incumbent must also demonstrate an ability and/or interest in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
