Job Title: Executive Vice President - Workers' Compensation

Job Description 

JOB SUMMARY
Athens Administrators has an immediate need for an Executive Vice President, Workers’ Compensation Claims to oversee the entirety of the Workers’ Compensation department and will be located in Concord, CA. The primary focus of the EVP, Workers’ Compensation, will be on the delivery of the highest-quality claims service throughout all locations and divisions of Athens. This position is responsible for driving consistently high performance, quality and best practices throughout the claims organization. Incumbent will be responsible for setting the strategic direction of Athens’ approach to claims administration. They will create and maintain a progressive, high-performing claims handling organization. This driven individual will always be in the pursuit of new and better ways to approach the business. The EVP, Workers’ Compensation will be part of and work closely with the Executive Management team to assure that overall company objectives are being achieved. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Incumbent must have the skills, ability and judgment to perform the following essential job duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:

 Ensures that a consistent high-quality claims service is being provided to all clients throughout each branch location and units of the company.
 Cultivates strong relationships with clients. Maintains regular communication and interaction with clients to assess their ongoing level of satisfaction.
 Establishes best practices with Management team and holds units accountable for satisfying these objectives.
 Responsible for developing goals and metrics for the Claims department and Claims Senior Management team on a monthly basis. Accountable for successful monthly results across all claims divisions.
 Responsible for the cultivation of direct reports management, leadership and technical skills.
 Works with managers to develop and refine the claims handling processes.
 Responsible for Regulatory, Carrier and Client Compliance (state and nationwide).
 Responsible for overseeing audits (client, carrier and state).
 Assures that Athens runs efficiently in terms of claims workflows, staff and caseloads.
 Responsible for SSAE 16 Compliance.
 Oversees consistent and accurate claims coding occurring throughout the organization.
 Is the public face of Athens’ workers’ compensation in the risk management marketplace and in overall terms of our approach to claims handling.
 Speaks and presents at industry events.
 Works directly with clients to develop high-performing programs.
 Assists the President and Sales team in the procurement of new accounts.
 Leads the development of new claims product generation, identifies the features, merits, advantages and the cost of the services to be marketed.
 Works with the President and Business Development team on the development, preparation of written and oral presentations and pricing models to prospective clients.
 Attends industry and professional meetings, conferences and seminars as deemed appropriate.
 Responsible for the successful and timely delivery of projects while staying within budget.
 Monitors quality, compliance, and results of claim policies, procedures and results across all claims lines of business.
 Ensure all claims lines of business are effective and producing quality operational and financial results.
 Lead the entire Claims department in maintaining a positive customer service environment.
 Aligns with Senior Management team to ensure consistent and successful execution of claims department initiatives.
 Oversees the identification of business drivers and trends as well as development and execution of strategic plan to address trends.
 Budget/Expense Management – work with Chief Financial Officer to analyze actual vs planned, perform staffing analysis and budget forecasting.
 Develops Senior Management claims team to ensure succession plan and talent retention. Identifies and promotes opportunities for exposure and experience to ensure continuous development of senior management claims team.
 Responsible for training and education for all claims staff.
o Ensures that claims Senior Management team review industry publications and monitors pending legislation and regulations to determine impact of new developments on company products and services.
 Oversees the due diligence process (carriers, prospects and new clients).
 In conjunction with Account Management responsible for the oversight of the new client on-boarding process.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervising, scheduling, assigning, monitoring and evaluating work of assigned staff are responsibilities for supervisory positions.
 Direct reports will be Division Workers Compensation Claims Managers and Claims Operations Manager.

Fiscal Responsibilities
 Manages the financials of the Workers’ Compensation claims department. Analyzes costs, activities, operations, and forecasts data to determine divisional progress towards stated goals.
 Confers with the Executive team to plan and develop methods and procedures to increase sales, lower costs and obtain greater efficiency.
 Highest level of payment authority
 Highest level of reserve authority
 Review and approve direct report’s monthly expense reports

Job Requirements 

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

 Expert knowledge of workers’ compensation laws, policies and procedures.
o Strong proficiency in determining case value and negotiating settlements.
o Strong understanding of medical and legal terminology.
 Fifteen (15) years workers compensation claims management experience including (10) years supervisory experience.
 College degree preferred, masters’ degree ideal.
 Prior management experience with a TPA preferred
 Strong mathematical skills and budget experience.
 Possess an intensive work ethic.
 Strong relationship-building skills.
 Problem solver – Independent judgment and strong ability to resolve complex and sensitive problems.
 Strong data analysis, numeric reasoning and overall numeric proficiency.
o Must be extremely comfortable with numbers and data analysis.
 Strong attention-to-detail and the ability to research and resolve problems.
 Self-directed: independently evaluate, determine priorities, and manage projects and personnel.
 Expert verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills including presentation skills.
 Detail-orientated. Must be able to see the big picture, but ultimately be a detail-driven individual.
 Highly-developed organizational skills to meet multiple demands and deadlines.
 Highly-developed computer processing skills, specifically MS Excel.
 Valid Driver’s license and availability for travel to all Athens’ offices, including overnight trips.
 Excellent organizational skills.
 Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
 Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
 Ability to operate standard office equipment (fax, phone, printer, scanner, etc.)
 Ability to work in a paperless environment.
 Ability to type quickly, accurately and for prolonged periods.
 Must demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness in work product.
 Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time.
 Infrequent lifting of up to 20lbs may be required.
